SCOLIOSIS

Tags:

Scoliosis is a condition in which there is a sideways curve of the spine, often S or C-shaped. People of all ages can have this condition. In most cases the condition starts in the early stages of life but may not be detected until later. The cause of the majority of scoliosis cases is unknown. Scoliosis changes the normal motion and flexibility of the spine

Other Key points to know.

  • 2-3% of population have this condition.
  • Girls are 7 times more likely to have this condition.
  • Most likely age of detection is 10-15 years old as growing occurs.
  • Less than 10% of cases are considered as suitable for surgery mainly because minor to moderate cases are best treated conservatively.
  • Pain is not directly related to the condition in most minor cases.

While there may be many classifications of scoliosis other disease processes that may be associated with it are rare, I think the key concern for patients or parents of patients is what can be done about it and does anything need to be done about it? As with most conditions there is often a ‘window of opportunity’ for detection and best outcome, This basically hinges around early detection, assessment and appropriate treatment.

What can be done.

Curvature of the spine, even slight, can cause postural distortions and changes the normal motion and flexibility of the spine. Pain from these less than optimal loading patterns are best treated in the majority of cases with strategic exercises coupled with some form of manual therapy. While chiropractic is not a cure for scoliosis, chiropractic treatment has been shown to improve both pain and mobility.

To recap.

Early intervention provides the best outcome, so if nothing else have your children assessed early. Surgery for the majority of cases is not warranted, and remember the vast proportion of scoliosis cases are classified as mild to moderate and once assessed respond favorably to specific exercise and chiropractic treatment because both help to decrease pain and increase mobility.

So if you or someone you know has scoliosis and pain why not get a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause. Pain is not always as a result of the scoliosis.
